Canadian politicians have praised the election of Robert Francis Prevost, the first pope from the United States, who will direct the Catholic Church under the name of Léon XIV.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed support for the new sovereign pontiff in a publication on X at the start of the evening.
“I offer my prayers and my wishes to his holiness Pope Leo XIV for his election on this historic day for Catholics and those who adhere to the Vatican councils,” he said.
Mr. Carney has also mentioned the moments of tensions that are currently going through many regions of the world, forming the hope that the new Pope will be able to bring together the peoples.
“In this period of global challenges, which his pontificate is one of solidarity, compassion and dignity,” he continued.

The ex-head of the Canada Conservative Party (CCP), Pierre Hairyvre, addressed his “best wishes and [ses] Prayers ”to the new pope in a message published Thursday afternoon on X.
