According to the testimony of a 14-year-old baby-sitter at the time, Audrey then took the road to Indianapolis by hitchhiking and bus. A sacred trot since there were 480 kilometers to go. After some hesitation, the girl had returned home. Audrey, she disappeared at the bend of a bus stop.
A closed investigation, then reopened
For decades, no trace, no clue. Until detective Isaac Hanson decided to re -examine the files in early 2024. He then got his hands on an online DNA account, linked to Audrey’s sister. Little by little, he manages to identify an 82 -year -old woman, living outside Wisconsin, who turns out to be … Audrey Backeberg.
“She simply made the choice to leave and restart her life elsewhere,” said the sheriff Chip Meister in a press release. No crime, no organized concealment. Just a radical decision: cut all the bridges with its painful past.
The detective Hanson was able to speak with Audrey for 45 minutes. He tells the Wisn channel a lucid and serene woman: “She looked happy. She didn’t regret anything. She took her life in hand, far from the chaos.”
Audrey has not yet expressed the wish to review her loved ones or to expose himself to the media light. She simply, and discreetly, regained control of her destiny, 63 years later!
