Riyadh: The state visit of the sultan of Oman Haitham Ben Tariq, on May 4 and 5, 2025, in Algiers, marks a crucial stage in the strengthening of diplomatic relations between Algeria and Oman.
This historic displacement testifies to a growing regional and international recognition of the role of Algeria as a power of equilibrium.
Through this high-level visit, Algiers and Mascate reaffirm their common commitment in favor of stability, non-interference and a world order based on law, justice and equity. This dynamic is also part of a converging strategic vision with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, but also with other key actors in the region, such as Egypt and Qatar, who share the same desire for appeasement, cooperation and respected sovereignty.
A partnership based on confidence and shared vision
Welcomed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Sultan Haitham Ben Tariq began a two -day visit to Algiers, praised by the official press of the two countries as a milestone in the deepening of an exemplary partnership.
The Diwan Royal of Oman stressed that this visit “reflects the depth of fraternal relations between the two peoples” and aims to “strengthen cooperation on all levels, political, economic, strategic and cultural”.
Beyond the declarations of principles, Algiers and Mascate embody a common approach to international affairs, based on the promotion of dialogue, respect for the sovereignty of states and attachment to peaceful solutions of disputes, which testifies to a convergence of their foreign policies. This constant line has strengthened the credibility of the two capitals as guarantors of precious regional stability, in an often fragmented geopolitical environment.
Algiers and mascate two respected balance powers
In a multipolar world marked by a multiplication of tensions, Algeria and Oman are distinguished by a sober, autonomous and respectful diplomacy of international law.
The Omanais newspaper Times of Oman recalls that the two countries “support peaceful approaches” and “adhere to the principles of justice and equity”. Oman, faithful to his tradition of neutrality, has not participated in any external conflict and remains a confidence interlocutor of all the parties in the Middle East. Algeria, for its part, is part of the legacy of non-alignment and has embodied, since the Liberation War, a sovereign and respected voice, both in Africa and in the Arab world.
This convergence makes the two countries of natural mediators and credible facilitators on the regional scene. By strengthening their political consultation, Algiers and Mascate intend to consolidate the common Arab action, in the service of a fairer order, less conflictual and more respectful of the sovereignty of the peoples.
This vision is also shared by other regional partners such as Egypt and Qatar, who work together with a collective security architecture where dialogue takes precedence over confrontation.
A Saudi 2030 vision support
-The complementarity between Algeria and Oman is also expressed through their strategic alignment with Saudi Arabia. All three share an assertive desire to build diversified, resilient and future economies. Cooperation between Algiers and Mascate fully contributes to the objectives of the 2030 Vision of the Crown Prince Mohammed Ben Salman, while nourishing the Vision 2040 of Oman and the Economic Diversification Agenda of Algeria.
The discussions between heads of state also focused on political coordination mechanisms with Riyadh, especially in energy (within OPEC+) and security, in order to guarantee lasting stability in the Gulf region, in the Maghreb and in the Sahel. Algeria, Oman, Saudi Arabia, as well as Egypt and Qatar, gradually build a strategic convergence around the pillars of national sovereignty, regional cooperation and shared prosperity.
Concrete results at the service of common development
The visit of the Sultan Haitham was marked by the signing of several cooperation agreements in the fields of energy, renewable energies, tourism, Saharan agriculture, logistics and technologies.
These agreements are part of the continuity of President Tebboune’s visit to Mascate in October 2024, during which eight memorandums of understanding had been signed.
Among the concrete achievements is the creation of an Algerian-Manese investment fund, the objective of which is to finance structuring projects in the strategic sectors. Infrastructure and logistics projects (notably in Salalah) as well as partnerships in the fields of the pharmaceutical industry and digitalization are being finalized.
Booming economic cooperation
Trade between Algeria and Oman have experienced remarkable growth. In 2024, the volume of bilateral exchanges increased by 48 %, reaching almost $ 153 million. Omani exports to Algeria amount to more than 62 million Omani Rials, compared to 700,000 Rials for imports.
Likewise, the number of Algerian companies recorded in Oman has almost doubled in one year, testifying to an increasing interest in this strategic market. Conversely, several major omani groups have consolidated their presence in Algeria: Sogex Oman has invested more than $ 150 million US dollars in energy infrastructure, while the Suhail Bahwan group is participating in the Arzew Urée factory project, worth $ 3 billion.
A strategic alliance for a peaceful multipolar world
At the end of this state visit, the two leaders reaffirmed their common desire to act in favor of a multipolar world based on dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect.
Algerian-Manese coordination will continue to intensify in international forums and mechanisms of Arab and Islamic cooperation.
Algeria, strong of its African and Mediterranean anchoring, and Oman, a key player in stability in the Gulf and the Sea of Oman, impose themselves as two complementary equilibrium powers. Together, and alongside moderate actors such as Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, they offer an alternative, peaceful and fair path to meet the challenges of the 21st century, far from the logics of confrontation or interference.
