People who create a Microsoft account should no longer define a password for it. The American company recommends that users identify with access keys. In the long term, Microsoft wants to completely delete passwords.
The password days could soon be counted. According to the American technology giant, users should in the future use other methods to authenticate their accounts. Consequently, Microsoft has already adapted the registration process for new accounts, as explained by the company in its blog.
Microsoft no longer requires password from people who create a new account. Instead, users receive different options to connect without password. Microsoft also offers existing users to delete their password from their account in favor of another authentication method.
Among the new particularly safe connection methods, Microsoft recommends the use of access keys (Passkeys). They can be installed on various devices and coupled for example to biometric identification methods – fingerprints or faceid. “Instead of connecting with complex and unsafe passwords, why not just smile,” says Microsoft to promote this functionality. The company adds that the access keys are much safer than conventional passwords and that once the access keys configured, the process generally takes place more quickly.
