Bienne has since Thursday has its commemorative cobblestones recalling the victims of Nazism who lived in this city. The inauguration of two places of memory coincided with the 80th anniversary of the capitulation of Nazi Germany.
These brass cobblestones which are encrusted in the sidewalk or in a public square are placed in front of the last freely chosen home of persecuted people by the Nazi regime, explains the regional group of the Stolperstein association, which literally means the stone on which we trip.
Two places of memory were inaugurated in Bienne, at the address where these people were born or were born: at number 40 rue Charles Neuhaus in memory of Clara Winograd-Pintschuk and on the Place du Chemin du Mon-Désir, in memory of the Jewish family Sonabend, Laja, Simon, Sabine and Charles.
Some 80 people, including the former Federal Councilor Ruth Dreifuss, attended the ceremony in memory of Clara Winograd-Pintschuk on Thursday.
