The meetings scheduled for the weekend between representatives of the American and Chinese administrations in Geneva bear witness to a Swiss policy of good dynamic offices, and even more of the deterioration of relations between Washington and Beijing. The two countries engaged in an unprecedented trade conflict since Donald Trump’s return to the White House are indeed anxious not to appear as the demanding part of negotiations, testify several observers, so as not to appear in the weak position. Swiss discussion offers on “neutral and impartial” terrain thus met the favors of the two capitals.
On the American side, the Minister of Finance Scott Bessent and the Representative of Commerce Jamieson Greer are announced in Geneva from Friday. A first meeting is scheduled that day with the president of the Confederation Karin Keller-Sutter and the federal adviser in charge of Economy Guy Parmelin. Meetings between the Chinese and American parties will take place from Saturday and are also planned for Sunday. This is the Swiss part – which does not play any role of mediator or facilitator in the discussions – which offers the building where the meetings will be held. This is not yet confirmed.
