Switzerland will have to have national regulations on the capture, transport and storage of CO2. The National Tacitly supported a motion from the Council of States in this direction. The Federal Council agreed.
According to the text of Senator Damian Müller (PLR/LU), the Federal Council must submit enough early to the Federal Assembly of the proposals for implementing climate policy for the period from 2031 to 2040. CO2 capture, transport and storage are key technologies to achieve the objective of zero net.
He therefore asked the government to set guidelines for construction, technique and exploitation. CO2 pipes should also be planned as well as needed needs, sites and rules for storage. The elected official also requests to specify any financial aid as well as the harmonization of authorization procedures.
The Federal Council agreed with the proposal. He recognizes the need to capture, transport and store CO2. This field of action will be integrated into the Act in Climate Policy for the after-2030. He already studies storage options, especially in the Swiss subsoil when possible, but also in foreign countries, under the sea. According to him, it will not be possible to store all CO2 only in Switzerland.
-Greenpeace Switzerland not convinced
The fact that parliament accepts without debate a framework law to prevent too much CO2 from spreading in the atmosphere, however, does not delight Mathias Schlegel, spokesperson for Swiss Greenpeace. For him, it is an observation of failure.
“It is a new Pandora box that opens. These are technologies that are still very unreliable for the moment. For many, they do not necessarily allow to have real negative programs,” he deplores Tuesday in Forum.

For him, you must above all succeed in protecting existing forests and protecting the oceans. “For this, we need strong ambitions in terms of biodiversity protection. The less we need these carbon capture technologies, the better we will wear.” Because according to him, the energy expenditure to capture, store and transport carbon is too high. “Each time we manage to reduce our emissions, we reduce our dependence on this kind of technologies. And this is really where the priority must be fixed.”
