(Keystone-ATS) From 2035, the natural increase in the population, the difference between the number of births and deaths, will be negative. Growth will therefore come exclusively from migration and will depend more and more on the country’s economic situation, the OFS in a statement on Tuesday.
The aging of the population will continue, with the transition to many baby boomers and the increase in life expectancy. The population aged 65 or over will increase by around 50% between 2024 and 2055 to reach around a quarter of the population.
The cantons that will see their population increasing (more than 20%) are Geneva, Vaud, Lucerne, Saint-Gall, Thurgovia and Argovie. Conversely, growth should be less than 2% in the Jura, in Neuchâtel, Schaffhouse and Appenzell Rhodes-Ettex.
