The Swiss are large by Viandards. Their average annual consumption amounts to 45 kilos per capita, almost one kilo per week, according to the latest Confederation data, relating to 2023. It is much more than the world average (34 kilos).
The planet cannot bear such a quantity, denounces four legs. The animal protection association calculated that Our country has just consumed the entire amount of meat recommended for the whole year. According to his calculations, this “critical threshold” falls this Tuesday, May 6, more than a month before the world average (June 19).
Four legs says it has based on the “scientifically founded” recommendations of the Eat-Lacet Commission, made up of international nutrition, health and sustainable development experts. For this body, the annual consumption of meat should not exceed 15 kilos – three times more than eaten in Switzerland.
The Swiss Nutrition Society (SSN), which works in collaboration with the Confederation, also formulates recommendations significantly lower than current consumption, or 18 kilos per year per person.
The SSN recommends in particular to vary the different sources of protein, to include vegetable proteins and to consume a maximum of two to three portions of meat per week, including poultry and transformed meat products.
“Naked overconsumption”
“This overconsumption of meat is harmful for our health, for the environment and especially for animals,” deplores Nicolas Roeschli, countryside for rent animals and food in four legs.
Last year, more than 85 million animals were killed in our country, the association said. A first. If we take into account imported meat, this figure probably exceeds 100 million units.
The health and environmental consequences have been largely documented. Many studies have highlighted the correlation between a high consumption of meat and diseases, such as cancer and type 2 diabetes.
In addition, this sector is very polluting. In Switzerland, farming represents 11% of total greenhouse gas emissions, the Federal Environment Office said. It’s more than air traffic.
Faced with these figures, four legs estimates that “the only real solution is to decrease the consumption of meat”. And conclude:
“Many studies conclude that a diet rich in plant products and containing less meat is beneficial both for health and the environment”
