Belgian athletics has announced its selection criteria for the world athletics championships in Tokyo. These requirements are more strict than those of previous World Cups.
The 20th world athletics championships this year will take place in Tokyo from September 13 to 21. The athletes have until August 24 to qualify. For many athletes, it will be happy reunions with the Olympic stadium, where the 68,000 places (unlike the 2021 games) can be occupied. And if everyone dreams of participating, it will still be necessary Meet the strict selection requirements announced by Belgian Athletics. Requirements that apply in addition to the international qualification system.
A Belgian athlete has three possibilities to participate individually in the world championships. Those who have managed to qualify: Nafi Thiam (heptathlon/6.880 points), Noor Vidts (heptathlon/6.707 points), Elise Vanderelst (1500m/4’01″26), Paulien Couckuyt (400mH/54″64), Pieter SISK (800m/1’43″48), Eliott Crestan (800m/1’43″48), Jochem Vermeulen (1500m/3’31″74), Isaac Kimeli (5.000m / 12’58 “16) and Ben Broeders (because/5m82).
All the other Belgians can qualify in two ways: either they reach the limit, or they are eliminated according to their position in the world ranking. It is in this last category that Belgian athletics tightens the reins. In 2023, it was enough to be in the top 36, now a place in the top 24 was required.
For most of the events, the Belgian qualification period extends from August 1, 2024 to August 24, 2025. The qualification period for the general competition, the relays and the 10,000 mA already started on February 25, 2024. That for the marathon began on November 5, 2023 and ends this weekend.
