Following the drama that occurred on Thursday, May 8, 2025 in Ngor, where the collapse of a building caused several victims, the Geological Society of Senegal (SGS) expressed its deep sadness and its solidarity to affected families. The organization, which brings together professionals from the country’s geoscience, calls for a collective awareness in the face of risks linked to urban construction.
In a press release, the SGS insists on the need to rigorously respect the standards in terms of construction, highlighting the importance of a prior assessment of the soil before any real estate operation. “This dramatic incident once again challenges the need for rigorous compliance with the construction standards, the preliminary evaluation and the geology of the site”, can be read in the document.
Geologists recall that geotechnical studies are essential, especially in areas with high density or potentially unstable, in order to avoid disasters like that of Ngor. They thus call on the authorities, real estate developers and all the actors of the building to strengthen controls and to further integrate geoscience experts into the project validation processes.
Finally, the Geological Society of Senegal says it is ready to bring its expertise to shed light on the causes of collapse and propose sustainable solutions in order to guarantee the safety of populations in the future.
