Imports of liquefied natural gas from the United States increased to 35 % of total gas imports from Spain in the first four months of this year, against just over 20 % a year ago, while Russian LNG imports decreased, according to data published on Friday.
Europe is importing more and more super-refrouded gas shipped from the United States since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia has considerably reduced the amount of Russian gas transported to Europe by gas pipeline.
During the first four months of the year, Spain imported the equivalent of 45,932 Gigawattheures (GWH) from gas from the United States, against 24,885 GWh a year earlier, according to data from the operator of the Spanish gas network Enagas.
-The United States has become the main gas supplier in Spain, replacing Algeria, which sends liquefied gas and also feeds Spain directly by gas pipeline.
The overall demand for gas in Spain decreased by 3 %, said Enagas.
American liquefied gas has also replaced the liquefied gas sent by Russia. The share of Russian gas in total gas imports of Spain fell to 13.3 % in the first four months of this year, against 22.4 % at the same period last year.
