At birth, the immune system of your newborn is not yet fully developed. By making yourself vaccinated during your pregnancy, you produce antibodies that cross the placenta and protect your baby from its first days of life, a period when it is particularly vulnerable.
Four essential vaccines in 2025
Against darling
This very contagious respiratory infection is circulating all year round, with epidemic peaks every 3 to 5 years. In 2024, an upsurge was observed, causing the death of 20 infants under a year in France. In the newborn, darling can seriously hinder breathing, sometimes requiring hospitalization in resuscitation.
Against flu
Contract flu during your pregnancy can cause serious complications: increased risk of resuscitation, miscarriage or premature delivery. Vaccination protects you and, by extension, protects the smooth running of your pregnancy.
Against the COVVI-19
Pregnant women have a higher risk of developing a serious form of COVID-19. This infection also increases the risk of premature childbirth. Infants of less than 6 infected months often require hospitalization.
Against bronchiolitis
This infection of small bronchi can be particularly dangerous in toddlers. If most infants heal spontaneously, 2 to 3 % of under a year should be hospitalized, sometimes in intensive care. Maternal vaccination can transmit antibodies that will effectively protect your baby up to 6 months.
Note: for bronchiolitis, an alternative exists with the Nirsévimab (Beyfortus), a monoclonal antibody which can be administered directly to your baby at birth.
Who can vaccinate you?
Several Health professionals are authorized to prescribe and administer these vaccines: your gynecologist, your midwife, your attending physician, a nurse or a pharmacist. Do not hesitate to approach the subject during your prenatal consultations.
