“Totally absurd” : This was the reaction of the Senator of the State of California, the Democrat Scott Wiener and many other officials of the Golden State, at the last idea of Donald Trump, namely to reopen Alcatraz, the island prison of the Baie de San Francisco, symbol of an implacable prison universe. Closed in March 1963, it was transformed ten years later into a national park visited by some 1.2 million tourists each year.
On his social network, Truth Social, Trump indicated, Sunday, May 4, that he had given orders to the federal prisons office, in coordination with the Department of Justice, the FBI and internal security, of “Reopen a considerably enlarged and rebuilt version of Alcatraz, in order to incarcerate the most violent and ruthless criminals of America”.
The president linked the project to his difficulties in fulfilling his objectives of massive expulsion of undocumented migrants. Pending new credits voted by the Congress, the detention centers (with a capacity of 50,000 places) are full, and justice has put a brake on its hints of rewinds on the border without legal proceedings. “We will no longer be the hostages of criminals, thugs and judges too frightened to do their job and allow us to expel the criminals illegally entered in our country”writes Trump.
