US President Donald Trump has made the fight against crime a key element in his second mandate in the White House. And what could be more symbolic than the reopening of the emblematic prison of Alcatraz in the Bay of San Francisco.
“I order at the prisons office, as well as at the Ministry of Justice, the FBI and the Ministry of the Interior to reopen, enlarge substantially and rebuild Alcatraz to enclose the most dangerous and violent criminals in America,” said Donald Trump on his social social network.
According to him, “for too long, America has been the victim of vicious, violent and recurrent criminals, the lie of society, which will never bring anything other than misery and suffering,” wrote the republican billionaire on Truth Social. The billionaire estimates Donald Trump that the restart of the establishment, closed in March 1963, will be a “symbol of law, order and justice”.
“This is why today I order at the prisons office, as well as at the Ministry of Justice, the FBI and the Ministry of the Interior to reopen, expand substantially and rebuild Alcatraz to lock up the most dangerous and violent criminals in America”.
America’s harder prison
Located two kilometers from the coast, the former prison is today an emblematic tourist attraction of San Francisco Bay in California. This prison built between 1910 and 1912 in part with materials from the old citadel. On August 11, 1934, the first contingent of 137 prisoners arrived in the establishment from the American penitentiary of Leavenworth in Kansas. Most prisoners are notable banking thieves, counterfeiters or murderers.
Alcatraz acquired the reputation of being the hardest prison in America as soon as it is created and is considered by many to be the most formidable prison in the contemporary world. During its 29 years of operation, the penitentiary assures that no prisoner has ever managed to escape. A total of 14 escape attempts took place, involving 36 prisoners: two men trying twice; 23 were captured, six were shot dead during their escape, two drowned and five were listed as “missing and alleged drowned”.
The establishment, where the greatest chefs of the mafia had been imprisoned and in particular Al Capone, had been closed due to too high operating costs, according to the American prisons office.
