Armed men killed at least four people on Sunday in a Colombian northeast locality declared the day before “peace zone” for some guerrillas, authorities announced.
President Gustavo Petro had announced the creation of a “peace area” encompassing the municipality of Tibu, in the catatumbo region, for the guerrinleros of the Frennte 33, dissidents of the ex-FARCs cornered by their rivals of the National Liberation Army (ELN) and targeted by a murderous offensive in January.
Sunday around 6:00 pm (01 Swiss 01:00 am on Monday), “armed motorcycle individuals” fired in three people on the public highway, local police said in a statement transmitted to AFP by the government of the Department of Norte de Santander.
-Large -scale offensive
The victims succumbed to their injuries to the hospital. The police reported a separate murder not far from there, without giving more details. The authorities also discovered a corpse in a rural area of Tibu, without making any link at this stage.
The ELN undertook in January a large -scale offensive against the Frente 33 to take control of the Catatumbo, Tibu being the Colombian village which presents the most important concentration of Coca cultures, according to the UN. The clashes left more than 70 dead and 55,000 displaced. Dozens of members of the Frente 33 went to the authorities to avoid being killed by the ELN.
President Petro has been trying since his coming to power in 2022 to implement a policy of “total peace” with the guerrillas, whose fights against the regular and paramilitary forces have been shaking the country for more than 50 years. But a year and a half from the end of his mandate, little progress has been made.
