The traffic jam did only dissolve during the night, the police said.
In the early Monday morning, the traffic on the Gotthard rolled again in both directions, as the Viasuisse transport service confirmed at the request of the Keystone-Sda news agency.
Shortly after 10 a.m. on Sunday, the traffic jam on the south portal had broken the five kilometers in length. The 10-kilometer mark then followed at 12:30 p.m. In the early afternoon it was already 14 kilometers between Basca and Airolo Ti, as the Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) announced. Drivers had to expect a waiting time of up to two hours and 20 minutes.
The reason for the traffic jam was the end of the spring holidays in several populated Swiss cantons – including Zurich and Lucerne.

Also on the north portal there was temporarily between Wassen and Göschenen UR a two -kilometer traffic jam with a waiting time of around 20 minutes. The traffic in front of the southern portal had already thawed to ten kilometers on Saturday. The north portal towards the south also occurred.
For travelers in the direction of Zurich, Viasuisse and TCS recommended the alternative route via the A13 and the San Bernardino tunnel. The San Bernardino Pass is expected to remain closed until the end of May.
