PS president Paul Magnette called for resistance on Wednesday during a vigil of the Labor Day, facing a right deemed “ineffective”, “always more radical” and who “does not know how people live”.
While union actions have multiplied in recent months against the measures of governments from the 2024 elections, the leader of the first French -speaking opposition party described right -wing executives who “decide from the top of their ivory tour, without ever listening to workers.” In front of a few hundred activists gathered for a supper in an association house near Fleurus (northeast of Charleroi), he passed through the menu all the categories of workers and pre-deprecated people who will be struck by the reforms of governments where the PS no longer sits.
In his eyes, the federal government is “ineffective, because it only moves the problems”, by referring people excluded from unemployment to CPAS. “And although they make twelve billion savings, on the back of pensioners, social security and health, they aggravate the deficit and debt of our country”. According to him, the PS, since the opposition, has the ability to retreat these governments. “We have denounced their desire to no longer take into account the maternity and paternity leave for the pension, they fell. We have denounced the absurdity of sanctioning people who resumed training, they fell. We mobilized to defend the status of artist, they fell. Convening the resistance, a few days before the 80th anniversary of the Liberation, the socialist vilified, without however appointing any party or any political adversary in Belgium, a reactionary right which “attacks everything that nourishes democracy, flirts with racism and activates the hatred of the poor.” For the Labor Day, the president of the PS traditionally takes the floor on May 1. The “vigil” established this year is part of a week of festivities and socialist political moments marking the 140th anniversary of the party.
