Remco Evenepoel sustained shoulder complications during recovery: “If I was a tennis player, career was over”
With healthy tension in his lower abdomen. For example, Remco Evenepoel is at the start of the Brabantse Pijl on Friday, his official return in the peloton after his accident. The double Olympic champion went through a difficult recovery period – including complications. “But my loved ones and faith helped me enormously,” he shared to the press.
“No, it was not easy to see everyone training and to be able to do nothing for 6 weeks in the bad Belgian weather.”
Despite a broad smile at his press chatter, Remco Evenepoel does not hide that he went through a difficult period after his accident with a bpost van in December.
“Fortunately I was able to count on a lot of support from Oumi and my family. We have prayed a lot together. I discovered faith in the past year. For me it was a hold.”
For example, Evenepoel climbed from a deep valley and his dense area saw the rider bloom completely again. “The button has turned around. I am ready to race again,” he shares.
tomorrow my shoulder will be fired firmly to catch the cobblestones. It is not ideal, but my legs have to turn the pedals.

Not only mentally, also physically, Evenepoel was given a solid challenge for his feet. Just like with his fall in the Basque Country, his shoulder was firmly hit.
“After a few weeks of my rehabilitation, we noticed a nerve injury,” says Evenepoel Open card. “It’s not right yet and hurts, but luckily it’s not as important as a rider.”
“If I was a basketball player, tennis player or volleyball player, my career was over. Tomorrow my shoulder will be tightened to catch the blows of the cobbles. It is not ideal, but my legs have to make the pedals turn.”
Because Evenepoel wants to refuel trust in the Brabant Arrow in the confrontation with Van Aert and Pidcock. “It will certainly motivate me that I drive close to my own house and parental home. I want to have fun.”
No more stopping
After the digital press chatter, Evenepoel made time for a conversation with our reporter. The double Olympic champion once again confirmed the content of his Instagram message earlier this week.
“It has been a long process where I had no end point in the beginning. It was hard to estimate how serious that nerve injury is. Still actually.”
“There seemed to be no end, because we didn’t know when it would be healed. With a first serious injury you are full of fire, the second time that is less and the third time – especially in a short time – it is a bit less.”
“Then you doubt whether you still want it. Whether that can be delighted is worth it. Do you want to sacrifice all those things for it? Yes, at a certain moment I thought of stopping. It was so serious.”
“I talked about it at home and let it pass for a few days and weeks. The physiotherapist and the roles came back on the roles. Life came back to me. Now there is no longer any question of stopping.”
The people who have been there for me have ensured that I have bitten and that I seriously driven out to be ready.
Remco Evenepoel
“The people who have been there for me have ensured that I bitten and that I seriously drove to be ready,” says Evenepoel.
But what does “be ready” mean? “My shape is good enough to race. The last signals were positive. Results are hard to say. The nerve injury has not yet recovered. The muscles on my flank are not yet functioning.”
“That is why I drive with a sturdy tape. That will be stable enough. I have trained a lot without tape, once with. That went much better. So I will race with it for a longer period of time.”
There is no shortage of motivation. “I always want to be good, but I also have to accept if things are not going well enough. Then I have to make progress every day.”
The performance of Tadej Pogacar has certainly stimulated Evenepoel. “I take something like that on training.”
“When I see him busy, it only gives more fire to go even deeper or to go over my limit. Hopefully that will bear fruit.”
End of press conference
No shortage of motivation and jitters. That is the conclusion of Remco Evenepoel’s press chatter. Tomorrow he will finally be part of the Profpeloton again.
Evenepoel: “special and proud feeling when I was allowed to crawl on my golden bike for the first time”
I had no lack of motivators. At home I had a golden bike that gave me wings on training. And of course my loved ones supported me through thick and thin. Everyone helped me, so I am motivated and expect that many fans will be on the side of the road.

Evenepoel: “If I don’t believe I can beat Pogacar, I would not start”
Experience and trust pleasure
What does Evenepoel expect from his return to the peloton?
“I have not driven a course for about half a year now. I will be driving very close to my own house and my parental home tomorrow, so I just want to prove myself and have fun.”
“Can I beat Pogacar? If I don’t believe in it, I don’t have to stand at the start. I have not sat still in recent months. If the legs are there, why not? I just want to gain some confidence tomorrow.”
Evenepoel laughs: “Arsenal wins the CL, and I win in Liège”
What is easier: Arsenal that Champions League wins or I knock that Pogacar in Liège? “I think both Arsenal can win the Champions League if I am Liège-Bastogne-Liège.”

If there is a well in the way and I don’t expect it, it can hurt. But the physio will stabilize my shoulder well with tape, so normally it should not be a big problem.

The battle with Tadej Pogacar
Evenepoel gets a question about the rivalry with the world champion and all -rounder Tadej Pogacar.
“I am not sure if Tadej sent me a message after my accident, because it was a while ago,” he opens.
“He remains an inspiration to see. Although I am an opponent, so I have to beat him. My team also pays me for it,” laughs Evenepoel.
“I don’t try to analyze him too much, because I don’t think that is that smart. But I want to learn from his style to be able to beat him now or later. But Pogacar is perhaps the best rider since Eddy Merckx, so it’s not easy.”
The things I wrote down in the Instagram report were sincere. It was the first message that I wrote in years. I didn’t want to disguise it. My dense family and friends have seen me change in the period, but now it is going well.

Evenepoel: “Be sure to start in the future in Sanremo and the Tour of Flanders”
Of course I looked at the spring classics. It was special to see Van der Poel and Pogacar dominate. It motivated me during my training to push me extra. I want to participate in De Ronde and Roubaix someday, although the latter is not ideal on the calendar. But first I look at what will come.

Evenepoel: “Nerve injury on my shoulder is not right yet”
Complication during recovery
Evenepoel still suffered some complications at his injury.
“After a few weeks of recovery we noticed a nerve injury in my shoulder. But luckily that part of my shoulder is not that important,” he says about it.
“If I was a basketball player, tennis player or volleyball player, my career was over. Tomorrow my shoulder will be tightened to catch the cobblestones. It is not ideal, but my legs have to make the pedals run.”
Is this form enough to beat boys like Pidcock and Pogacar? I don’t dare say that.
Remco Evenepoel
It is always difficult to calculate how big my training arrears is. I was on the bike again on February 1. The first month I could hardly do any strong exercises. Only on an internship in Spain could I start it. My body was only ready for training with high intensity for the past two weeks. I made big steps, so I don’t think the Brabant arrow is coming too early. Of course I am not in top form, but I am happy that I can race.

Evenepoel: “Discover the faith in the past year”
Believe a hold in difficult months
“It is not the first heavy fall I had,” Evenepoel opens about his collision with the bpost van. “But it was not easy to see everyone training again, while I was not allowed to do anything for 6 weeks. I also had to stay inside, because the weather was not great.”
“The injury was worse than the last time. Even if it was the same shoulder again. But now I turned the button and I am ready to race. Oumi and I have prayed a lot. I discovered faith in the past year. For me it was a hold in that period of my life.”
