Slovak Prime Minister ignores European criticisms and meets Vladimir Putin
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico posted, on Friday evening, his proximity to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, in Kremlin, despite criticism from the European Union, who had strongly advised him not to go to Moscow.
Mr. Fico, known for his prorussian positions, told his host that he had ” no problem “ To accept the Kremlin invitation to attend the end of the Second World War commemorations in the Russian capital. “On the contrary, it was an honor to receive this invitation, which I accepted with joy”he said, during a meeting with Mr. Putin broadcast on Russian state television.
The head of European Union diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, had asked European leaders not to participate in the commemorations of May 9 in Moscow, and he was the only EU leader to attend. He had to change his program after the Baltic States had prohibited his plane from flying over their territory to reach the Russian capital. Robert Fico described this ban as “Childish and fun game”.
-Slovak Prime Minister also said Slovakia would put its veto on Brussels plan to do without Russian hydrocarbons if it should be adopted unanimously.
Vladimir Putin assured Mr. Fico that he would do ” All “ which is in his power to restore links with Slovakia, which, according to him, were “Frozen” under Western pressure. “We have always had friendly relations with Slovakia”he said.
Like his Hungarian neighbor and ally Viktor Orban, Robert Fico has repeatedly criticized the support of the European Union to Ukraine since the start of the invasion of Moscow, as well as the Isolation policy of Russia led by Brussels. The Slovak leader had already met Mr. Putin in December 2024 to discuss the gas supply.
