The state wants to do more for biodiversity in Geneva. For this, it plans to invest 50 million francs between 2025 and 2030 to improve ecological infrastructure. This Biodiversity plan For example, will be dedicated to the creation of passages under the road for fauna, to the fight against invasive plants, the reduction of pollution or the restoration of ponds.

“Despite a misconception, the Canton of Geneva is not a Canton-Ville,” emphasizes Antonio Hodgers, magistrate in charge of the territory. Almost 70% of the territory is not urbanized, between forests, lakes or agricultural areas. But the challenge is to create corridors between these pockets of nature. ” Because between traffic lanes, dense urban areas or too lit places, our roads sometimes into wildlife walls.

Act in town and in the countryside

To encourage the creation of developments favorable to the movement of wildlife, the State will subsidize projects of municipalities and private people up to 35 million. The remaining 15 million will be used directly by the canton. The bill concerning this credit will soon be tabled and aims to transform both agricultural areas and urban areas.

This 2025-2030 biodiversity plan follows a version dating from 2020. The latter did not have a dedicated budget, but had allowed the construction of several reedlières and fauna passages.

With this version, the State Council wants to move up a gear. “It is not in town that the quality of the biological corridors is low,” says Antonio Hodgers. In the mandate for example, we note that vineyards not adapted to biodiversity offer a low ecological quality. ” He also recalls that government policy is not to “nibble in the agricultural area” in the years to come.
