After more than thirty years of waiting, the legendary owl of gold, treasure hidden in 1993, finally delivered his secret. Buried in the Dabo forest, in Moselle, it now transforms the town into a place of pilgrimage for thousands of enthusiasts.
“A place of pilgrimage”: this is how Serge Boyer, a 58 -year -old geocateur, sums up what becomes of the commune of Dabo, in the Vosges massif, since the long -awaited revelation of the location where the great golden was located. This Friday, May 2, a documentary was released in the cinema where the mystery was finally lifted, more than thirty years after the launch of this legendary treasure hunt. The treasure was less than seven meters from the terminals of Saint-Martin, in the heart of a forest on the edge of the departmental.
The news attracted, the next morning, a crowd of “owners”, as the participants in this treasure hunt are called in 1993 by the author Max Valentin. They met around the bench and the dolmens of stone playing a key role in the last enigma, resolved on the night of October 2 to 3. It is from the numbers registered on these terminals that the solution has emerged, ending decades of uncertainty, speculation and deductions sometimes pulled by hair.
Dabo, point final…
“I discovered the owl to the 1 pm newspaper of Jean-Pierre Pernaut, I was 10 years old,” said a 41-year-old enthusiast. He had already come to Dabo in 2001, without success. “Dabo was very quickly a thesis, in 1994, 1995,” he recalls. But like many, he then let himself be diverted by other theories. Today, with his partner and their daughter, he plans to set out again in the footsteps of a new hunt: a second owl, accompanied by an unprecedented enigma whose starting point will be, Dabo.

“We have great owners who called us, who wrote to us, who asked us questions because some also thought that we were in confidence, but no […] I didn’t know anything, “says the mayor of the town, Éric Weber. He too is talking about” deliverance “, after years to see his city scrutinized by ever more treasure researchers. Now, the small Moselle town could experience a new boom, between tourism and collective fascination.
… And starting point
Since its creation, the hunt for golden owl has spent hundreds of thousands of players. Designed by Régis Hauser, alias Max Valentin, advertiser and author of puzzles who died in 2009, she promised a gold and silver sculpture, imagined by artist Michel Becker, to anyone would find her cache. But for a long time, the enigma remained irresolute, and a long legal litigation between Becker and the beneficiaries of Hauser had plunged the game into the dead end. In 2021, hunting was relaunched via the Discord platform, where enthusiasts were able to benefit from new indices.
