We are not kidding with the weather in Miami and protocols have been put in place which could lead to a suspension of the race in the event of a thunderstorm risk.
The second race of the F1 Academy was canceled today because of a soggy track. Since the sun has returned and, 1 hour from departure, these are always beautiful conditions that reign over Miami’s GP at Hard Rock Stadium.
However showers and even thunderstorms can arrive later during the day. The FIA therefore specified what could happen in this case.
“The sports commissioners, exercising the powers conferred on them by articles 11.9.2.A and 11.9.3.N of the International Sports Code of the FIA, decide the following:
-“In accordance with local public safety standards, it is possible that the race is suspended due to the risk of thunderstorm on or around the circuit, in order to allow all the staff to take shelter in an appropriate place. In such circumstances, for the smooth running of the test, the following procedures will apply:
“The race will be suspended in accordance with article 57 of the sports regulations. All cars will have to return to the lane of the stands and stop on the fast track, as described in article 57.2.”
“Once all the cars have returned in the stands, the teams will be informed via the official messaging system that they must be pushed out of the fast way and brought back to their garages.”
“The doors of the garages must remain open until the opposite instruction. In order to avoid any ambiguity, any car being in its garage at the time of the suspension of the race, or moved from the fast track to another part of the lane of the stands without or before this instruction, will be placed at the back of the queue of cars before the recovery, in accordance with articles 57.3 or 57.5 respectively.”
