Patreon has launched an update of its iOS application which allows fans in the United States to avoid the integrated Apple payment system when subscribing to new services. This allows them to bypass the commission of 30 % of the App Store. Techcrunch reports that this new option is reserved for creators using the Patreon subscription model, which invoices fans on their registration date rather than a fixed date or by creation.
According to Patreon, this update provides “alternative payment options for fans based in the United States registering for new subscriptions”. However, for the moment, creators using old billing models cannot still record new subscriptions via the IOS application.
Patreon announced that she was working to offer alternative payment options for unique payments in a future update. Meanwhile, the deadline of November 2025 to pass all creators to invoicing by subscription is pending following a recent judgment of the Court.
This judgment, which obliges Apple to allow developers to offer alternative payment methods without receiving a commission, resolves an argument started last August. Although the complete impact of this verdict is still in progress, Patreon maintains his commitment to favor transparency and stability while adapting to new rules in the United States.
For its part, Apple appealed this decision, hoping to reverse this major change imposed on the App Store.
