Book author Labor accidents. Invisible deaths and injuredNantes sociologist Véronique Daubas-Letourneux returns, for France 3 Pays de la Loire, to the worrying number of work accidents in France. They are, according to them, linked to an evolution of the organization of work but also to more and more strong pressure of pressure. Interview.
What are the current trends in accidents at work in France?
“The figures of 2023 indicate 723 recognized deaths that is to say 21 more than in 2022. It is the most important mortality since 2004. It has been more than two deaths per day on average. And again, these figures only take into account the general scheme, sectors like agriculture, fishing or state agents are not taken into account. These data give a phenomenon but they produce a dead angle. Work with stop each year and more than 33,000 work accidents with consequences deemed compensable.
What are the most affected sectors by work accidents?
-“The workers are the most affected, in particular for serious and deadly accidents, in particular the construction sector (roofer, carpenter, wide work …). In the temporary work, the figures are twice as high as the average. Employees of subcontracting companies are also more exposed. The fact of being in a precarious employment status makes some employees that are not saying no. Touched. Possible, perhaps also a context of lack of personnel … “
Is office work spared by work accidents?
“It is not spared. In the tertiary sector, psychosocial disorders are twenty times more taken care of in accident at work than in occupational disease, because it is very difficult to have burn-out recognized in occupational disease. Recall that the accident at work can be psychic if it is linked to a sudden event.”
Why do work accidents arise?
“There are very few” really accidental “accidents, where we can say, it is the fault of luck. Often, it is linked to a pressure context. For example, before the opening of a store, the gondola heads must be beautiful, in the precipitation, the employee did not use the stepladder and has a sprain. It is also the same thing during the weekends, when the companies are in subpa.”
What are the solutions to remedy it?
“The state has taken hold of the subject with a transverse plan. There is visibility that begins to emerge. But at the same time, the CHSCT (hygiene, safety and working conditions committee) were deleted. It is a shame because it was a body, in companies, where we could speak for a long time of work accidents. Why did it happen? Employers who do not comply with their obligations in terms of health and safety.
