Kirk Windstein, guitarist of Down and Frontman from Crowbar, says that the music of the next Down album emerged with surprising speed and spontaneity, marking a return to the very essence of the group. In an interview with The Jasta Showhe returns to the writing process and the energy found within the supergroup.
“It’s really magical” : Down’s alchemy is naturally restored
While Down plans to release a new full album in 2026 via Nuclear Blast Records, Kirk Windstein recently gave reassuring news of the project. Guest in the show The Jasta Showthe musician confirmed that all the battery tracks were already recorded, as well as almost all of the bass parts.
Returning to their recent session at Nodferatu’s Lair, Phil Anselmo’s studio, Windstein was enthusiastic: “We met on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and we already had seven written songs. Because we have five guys who can write riffs. Even our drummer writes riffs!”
He specifies that this return to the studio at five had not taken place since the recording of the first EP in 2011-2012. This long break allowed the group to find a certain freshness: “We hadn’t found ourselves to write for so long that everything seemed new. It was really magical. Ideas were naturally.”
-A homecoming in line with NOLA
This new creative impetus seems to be aligning with the group’s desire to reconnect with the sound of its beginnings, as Windstein had already mentioned in a previous interview. He declares today: “We don’t complicate things … It’s just us in a room, like at the time, and it tears.”
According to him, some of the latest group recordings, especially Down III: Over The Underhad become more complex, moving away from the simple and direct formula which made the strength of their first album released in 1995. This new opus therefore promises a return to this “old-school” formula so appreciated by fans.
