Make a relatively modest progress in terms of the classification in terms of human development, Morocco went from 122nd place in 2024 to 120th this year, according to a new report published today by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). However, the kingdom must continue its efforts since it remains widely preceded by several other MENA countries.
Entitled “A case of choice: individuals and perspectives in the era of AI”, the report on human development 2025 offers an in -depth analysis of the dynamics of global progress, articulated around a set of key indicators relating to health, education and income levels, synthesized in the human development index (HDI).
The projections for 2024 report a generalized stagnation of the HDI through all regions of the world, revealing a disturbing break in the momentum of development. Beyond this slowdown, the report highlights a significant worsening of inequalities, accentuated between rich nations and vulnerable nations.

Morocco is currently positioning itself in 120th place in the global classification of human development, with an index of 0.710 in 2023. This score translates a minor improvement compared to 2022, where the country occupied the 122nd position. In addition, the ranking of the kingdom, although moderate, improved between 2015 and 2023, progressing by 7 rows.
-In terms of socio-economic indicators, life expectancy at birth reached 75.3 years, while the country has 15.1 years of study for future generations and an average of 6.2 years of schooling. On the economic level, gross national income per capita is estimated at $ 8,653.
In terms of multidimensional poverty, around 6.4% of the Moroccan population lives in a situation of deprivation according to the report, a proportion which covers a large category of social and economic dimensions. In addition, the intensity of poverty, reflecting the severity of the deprivation encountered by these populations, could reach 42%, indicating a significant average of deprivation suffered by people in a situation of multidimensional poverty.
Regarding gender development, Morocco ranks in group five, embodying a low level of equality between men and women. His score of 0.859 demonstrates a still notable gap in the realization of gender equality, compared to other countries present in the ranking.
On a global scale, Iceland dominates the classification with a score of 0.972, followed by Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, and Germany which closes the top 5 alongside Sweden. In the Mena region, the United Arab Emirates are positioned in 15th place, and appear in top 50 with other Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia (37th), Bahrain (38th), Qatar (43rd) or Oman (50th). They are followed by Kuwait (52nd), Iran (75th), Algeria (96th), Egypt (100th), Jordan (100th), Lebanon (102nd), Tunisia (105th) and Libya (115th).
On the other hand, Niger is at the tail of the ranking in 188th place, followed by Chad in 190th position, while Central Africa occupies the 191st row. Somalia, faced with major structural challenges, is positioned in the 192nd place, while South Sudan completes this peloton in the 193rd position.
