Disparities and access to specialized care

Dermatocare’s results highlighted inequalities in the management in the territory. According to an official in the Operational Unit Opecology innovation of the partner, the survey reveals “disparities in terms of resources, which leads to too long diagnostic times and inequalities in access to specialized care”. These differences affect the time necessary for diagnosis and access to specialized centers or teams.

Care coordination and nursing role to strengthen

The survey has also shown shortcomings in coordination of care. Only 68 % of the centers organize tripartite consultations (, pharmacists, nurses), yet considered to be effective. The role of nurses is also identified as a weak point. Advanced and coordination nurses are deemed “essential, especially for advanced forms of melanoma”, ensuring monitoring and management of treatment. However, only 20 % of the centers have a full team of specialized nurses, limiting overall efficiency.

Concrete actions to reduce differences

Convinced of the importance of prevention and early diagnosis, Pierre Fabre laboratories deploy several initiatives to optimize care in France.

Training of practitioners. Educational tools have been created for general practitioners. Their role is essential to support patients, especially those suffering from melanoma, in connection with expert centers, crucial in a context of decrease in city dermatologists.

Support for oncologists. To support them in the announcement of the , the partner offers training for the announcement system. These moments, whether diagnosis or progression, are difficult and require specific training.

Patient support days. Co-constructed with hospitals, these days allow patients to meet, exchange via round tables and testimonies, and participate in support care workshops (nutrition, physical activity, stress management) for overall support.

These initiatives aim to respond to the disparities identified by the Dermatocare survey, by strengthening prevention, early diagnosis and care for melanoma patients.
