Since 2000, a law has given the possibility of receiving post-vaccination compensation. Overview on side effects and on this device.
At the end of December 2020, Luxembourg began its COVVI-9 vaccination campaign. Five years after the pandemic, vaccines and barriers have overcome the virus. In the Grand Duchy, the reports of undesirable effects were subject to particular attention from the Ministry of Health and Social Security. Indeed, in the event of damage suffered as a result of vaccination, it is possible to request compensation.
If a person faces side effects, it is necessary to refer to the law of July 4, 2000 relating to state responsibility for vaccinations. This legislation comes if vaccination has been ordered or recommended by the Luxembourg state. Within the framework of this law, a person may request compensation from the Ministry of Health in the event of serious damage caused by vaccination which caused death or long -term complications. If the damage has not been reimbursed by health insurance, a person can thus make a request through a form. The ministry can then resort to expertise, before assessing the damage in question.
But what is a side effect? According to a report from the Division of the Pharmacy and Medicines of the Health Department of June 2023, it is a question of “a harmful and unwanted reaction which can lead to a serious or non -serious effect”. Doctor Steve Pascolo, immunologist at Zurich University Hospital, wants to be frank. “Any vaccine leads to side effects. These are effects that are not a priori sought after, but sometimes are inevitable. ” The doctor, however, wishes to reassure: “With an injection, there may be the appearance of an immunological response such as fever and fatigue”.
-Immunologist at Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), Doctor Markus OLLERT recalls that national and European medical agencies watch over the grain. “At the start of the Cavid period, we had vaccines that were able to cause a few thrombosis, they were removed from the market. Then other vaccines were developed and adapted. For each medication and each vaccine, there is a list of everything that has been reported by any patient in any country in Europe. This is called pharmacological vigilance. “
Isolated cases
At European level, when a vaccine is approved in the European Union, increased monitoring is carried out in the event of a reporting of undesirable effects. The European Pharmacovigilance Database Eudravigilance has thus recorded the figure of 2,537 cases of undesirable effects. Or “0.18 % of undesirable effects declared for all doses of vaccines administered”, specifies the report. This represents a tiny part of vaccinated people, with expected and non -serious effects. Most comprising pseudo-grippal symptoms.
For Doctor OLLET, the probability of occurrence of an adverse effect is therefore tiny and is not linked to being young, to be old, to have an illness or to take medication. “It is more likely that people already have certain other diseases of which they could also develop undesirable effects.” For its part, the report specifies that the suspicion of undesirable effects after a vaccination does not necessarily mean that there is a causal link.
