Agadez’s mother and child center, commonly known as DKO hospital, was the victim of a fire, declared on the night of Wednesday, May 8, 2025, around 2 am. The fire hit the pediatrics block A of the center where important material damage and the death of an infant was recorded. Following this fire, the governor of the region, Brigadier general Ibra Boulama Issa, made a trip early on Thursday, May 08, 2025 whose objective is to assess the extent of the damage caused and to learn about the causes of said fire.
Immediately alerted, the civil protection agents of the Agadez firefighters were quickly deployed to the location in order to protect people, by evacuating, protecting and securing vulnerable people but also to circumscribe fire in order to limit damage. The intervention of firefighters ended around 4 am, thus reflecting the extent of this fire.
Upon arrival on site, the governor, which accompanies a large delegation, was greeted by the staff of the mother and child center. He was directly led to the burned block where he unfortunately noted the enormous damage caused by this fire. All the equipment was burned. The beds, the devices everything has gone up in smoke and requires an urgent response to the reference character for the health of the mother and the child of this center for the Agadez region. The saddest aspect is above all the death of the child born Wednesday, May 7, around 5 p.m.
To cope with future requests from this service, those responsible for the mother and child center have already set up a space. There is therefore the urgency to support the CME to have a pediatric service A in order to be ready to provide the necessary services to users.
After the visits and explanations he received the governor spoke to the press where he delivered his findings and his compassion to the staff and the family of the deceased child. The Ibra Boulama Issa brigade praised the bravery of firefighters for the efficiency with which they managed to circumscribe the fire. He also presented the compassion of the country’s highest authorities to the family of the deceased child in the fire.
“We have come to the mother and child center to see what are the urgent provisions which will have to be taken as well by the health services and by other structures. Beyond that, it would be necessary to see at the level of this center, but also at the level of all public, parapublic and private structures so that the fire safety standards are updated and can be respected. We are in the middle of heat which is a very favorable period for fires. So this is a call that we would like to launch to all the structures to already verify the fire materials which are at their disposal in particular, the fire extinguishers, “said the governor. At the same time, he praised the promptness of the firefighters who intervened in time to limit the damage. Brigadier general Ibra Boulama Issa reiterated and insisted on his call for caution and control of fire equipment at all levels and asked the civil protection service to support all those who request their expertise for this purpose.
In his explanations, the chief doctor of the childhood center, Mr. Serge stressed that in terms of material damage the balance sheet is underway. “It is latest generation material, with regard to neonatology resuscitation. These are enormous losses! But we are taking stock in order to see what can be recovered, reformed and put in service adequately for the continuity of care, especially for infants, “said the chief doctor.
The investigation to determine the cause of the fire is underway with the competent services and the hospital officials await the conclusions of this investigation to find out the real origins of fire.
