Red Bull has been at the center of attentions for a year, whether positive or negative. The Horner affair, the various departures of framework of the structure, the difficulties with the RB20 and RB21, but also the successes and ultimately the world title of Max Verstappen last year, created an astonishing mixture which, depending on the moments, gives the impression that the stable is on the brink of the crisis or that it has the means to be a candidate for the title again. Sometimes both at the same time.
But one thing seems constant: for 12 months, rumors have been going well around the future of Verstappen, often binding it to Aston Martin and to potential exorbitant financial attempts to attract the favors of the Dutch in a more or less close future, knowing that it is normally under contract with Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season.
However, currently, the near future of Aston is Fernando Alonso – from the top of his 43 years – who embodies him. Present at a press conference this Thursday in Djeddah, alongside Verstappen, the Spaniard did not fail to be questioned about this theme which was the common thread of this meeting with journalists.
“I do not think, because I have a contract for next year”said the double world champion on a possible transfer of Verstappen which would threaten his bucket. “But I see rumors. It’s very good for the team. The world champion is sometimes linked to other teams and a possible departure from Red Bull, and the teams that are mentioned are Mercedes, Aston Martin and Ferrari.”
“This testifies [de la valeur] of the project in which we participate, of the future of this team. As I always said, even last year when I extended my contract, I will pilot as long as I feel fast and competitive and the team will need me behind the steering wheel. “
“But my contract is much longer than my pilot career, and I will therefore stay in this team for many years, in a different role. And if it means that I can win a world championship when I am not behind the wheel, I will still be very proud of the project.”
If he does not replace him, Verstappen could possibly pilot alongside him. Would Alonso welcome him with pleasure? “Yes, but it is unlikely that it will happen”smiled the former Renault, McLaren and Ferrari driver. “Very unlikely.”
