The Ukrainian Security Services (SBU) said Thursday that it has thwarted the assassination of a Ukrainian nationalist militant in the southern city of Odessa, adding that a woman had been arrested.
Sergui Sternenko, a very followed blogger in Ukraine, was “victim of an assassination attempt using a firearm,” said SBU on Telegram, adding that his life is no longer in danger.
“I was attacked. I was injured, “wrote the activist on his Telegram channel, accusing Russia of being behind this attack.
-Sergui Sternenko, former chief of a regional antenna of the ultra-nationalist Pravy Sektor movement in Odessa, had an active role in the Pro-European Revolution of Maidan, in 2014 in kyiv. He was sentenced in February 2021 by an Odessa court at the age of seven and three months in prison for the murder by firearms of a local elected official in 2015, before being acquitted a few months later.
His incarceration had caused a wave of demonstrations, denouncing selective and corrupt justice in this region where a strong Russian -speaking community resides.
Since then, Sergui Sternenko, a volunteer within the army, has been holding a YouTube channel followed by 2 million people, in which he comments and analyzes the political and military life of Ukraine.
