A kid with the bike in the blood
Caleb Ewan was born on July 11, 1994 in Sydney, in a family where cycling is more than a sport: it is a religion. His father, a pro runner, takes him to eight years on his first race.
“I immediately knew that I wanted to do this all my life”, he confided in 2019 to Cycling Weekly. At nine, he won his first medal, a huge smile under his too large helmet.
Of Korean origin by his mother and Australian by his father, Caleb grows with an iron discipline and a dream: to become the best.
As a teenager, he burns the steps. In 2011, he was champion of Australia junior on the road. The following year, he won world gold in junior tracks on track. At 17, he beats pros at the Jayco Bay Classic 2012, even impressive Robbie McEwen legend.

When the body and the mind tire
The 2020 pandemic slows down its momentum. In 2021, tensions with Lotto-Soudal pushed him to join Jayco-Alula. But the results crumble: only one WorldTour victory in three years. Falls, frequent in sprints, mark it.
“Whenever I fell, I got up, but it left traces” he admitted to The Guardian In 2023. At the end of 2024, without a contract, he doubts. “ I thought I would stop there. Bike was my life, but it hurt me ”he will confide on X.
However, Ineos Grenadiers reached his hand in January 2025. He was reborn, winning the week Coppi and Bartali and the Tour of the Basque Country.“Ineos gave me confidence. They treated me like a human, not just a runner ” he said in early April.
We then thought it was revived, reboosted but something broke in it, the flame has disappeared and Caleb Ewan announces today May 6, his sports retirement.
But something was broken. The flame flicens.

Retirement time
“I gave everything I had in cycling, but in recent years, especially 2024, have damaged my love for this sport. Even by winning, I no longer felt this deep joy. It’s time for me to leave “he wrote on Instagram.
He thanks Ineos for their support, but chooses his family-his wife Ryann, married in 2018, and their two children-and his well-being.
“I want to be a present father, a happy husband, not just a guy who runs after arrival lines. I don’t regret anything. I lived my dream. But now I want to live for myself ”
“If I can leave a message, it’s this one: listen to yourself. Victory is worth nothing if it destroys you. ”
