On the eve of his official return to the Brabançonne arrow roads, Remco Evenepoel advances with muffled steps. Victim of an accident in training in early December, the runner of Sudal Quick-Step is happy to be able to resume the bicycle even if it is not 100%.
It is a pleasure to see him at a press conference in the face of the media and there is no doubt that the exercise pleased the interested party, aware of what it implies. Remco Evenepoel gave an appointment to the specialized media this Thursday on the eve of its official return to professional races. This Friday, the Belgian aligns the Brabançonne arrow. And even if the leader of Sudal Quick-Step does not immediately expect to raise his arms, be able to be on his machine with his teammates and adversaries remains a great thing. Because the double Olympic champion returns from four months of hell following a road accident suffered in training, causing him fractures in one hand, a coast and an omoplate. The violence of the shock was such that the frame of his bike broke.
-On Thursday, Remco Evenepoel said how much this accident had marked him and how difficult it had been to keep morale to hope to come back. “It is not the first time, in fact that I have suffered a serious accident, and the fact that it happens during the winter has not made it easy,” launches the Belgian to the team. Knowing that everyone started to train again and that I had to wait six more weeks without doing anything, yes, it was quite difficult to accept. […] The injury was more serious than in April (in the Basque Country) but it was the second time on the same shoulder in a few months. It’s just a little summary but I think it’s the combination of all that made things quite difficult. But for the moment, everything is fine, I’m back and ready to run. I want to stay positive. »»
A shoulder always bruised
You will understand, the Belgian wants to leave his bad memories behind him. However, he does not want to do anything during the next races, especially since he is not quite recovered. “After a few weeks, we discovered a nervous lesion,” reveals the runner. She is not yet healed, so part of the shoulder muscle does not work at all for the moment. Fortunately, this muscle is not the most important for cyclists. […] But my hand is 100 %cured again, the ribs, the shoulder blade, the lungs too, only the ligaments and the shoulder muscles are still a little sensitive, and we will have to use a lot of adhesive strips tomorrow during the race, to stabilize the shoulder, especially on the paved sectors. It is not ideal of course but my legs run, it is the most important. »»
For the time being, the Soudal Quick-Step runner just wants to have fun on the bike because he knows that his shape is not optimal. The Belgian knows that he can gain power over the months and hope to perform on the turn and the world championships.
