The very slippery rue de Claire-Fontaine will soon become a single meaning and the city of Quebec will provide “self-service” abrasives to citizens who can spread them if they judge that the coast is dangerous in winter.
This is what the municipal councilor of Cap-aux-Diamants, Mélissa Coulombe-Leduc, announced, earlier this week at the Saint-Jean-Baptiste district council.
This winter, The newspaper already reported a viral video showing three cars unable to stop at the traffic light at the intersection of the streets of Claire-Fontaine and Saint-Jean, because of the icy road. In a case, a vehicle has even dangerously slipped into the sidewalk of the forecourt of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church.
Three -axis pilot project
To remedy the situation, the administration of the merchant mayor decided to set up “a pilot project” comprising three components.
first, the rue de Claire-Fontaine-between the streets Lockwell and Saint-Jean-will become a single meaning from the end of this summer and at least until the end of winter 2026. It will be possible to set up the street towards the René-Lévesque boulevard, but not to descend to rue Saint-Jean.
In what constitutes a first, Quebec City also provides for the installation of two self-service abrasive bins at the ends of rue de Claire-Fontaine. Citizens will be able to use them, if necessary and in case of an emergency, if they believe that the risk of slipping persists.
-Despite this exceptional and unprecedented measure in Quebec, Jean-Pascal Lavoie, spokesperson for the municipality, does not expect that there is a particular “issue” with the private entrepreneur responsible for the maintenance and snow removal of this coast.
The third decision is that of installing compulsory judgments with southern and northern approaches to the intersection of the streets of Claire-Fontaine, Lockwell and Saint-Gabriel.
Explanations and reaction
Councilor Coulombe-Leduc explained that the pilot project, which will last a few months, would notably measure the new car traffic habits. It should not be closed to this access to rue Saint-Jean leads to an overly marked increase in transit circulation in the sector, she agreed.
For his part, Anthony Cadoret, president of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste district council, said he was a priori satisfied with the measures of the city which take into account part of the suggestions of its regrouping. “We see it very positively. We do not harm traffic too much and, at the same time, we still come to secure the place, ”he rejoiced.
