Good news! After several months of consecutive increases, French consumers finally see the price of gas falling downwards in May and June 2025. Unfortunately, almost 60 % of the offers currently marketed on the market will not apply these advantageous discounts. Why will so many suppliers automatically benefit from this drop in the price of gas to their customers? Here is the explanation that may surprise more than one.
Big drop in gas prices in May and June 2025
After several consecutive months of increase, the price of gas finally begins a descending trajectory. While in April 2025, the price of gas reached its historic maximum, from May, The price of gas dropped by 6.4 %. The price per kWh of gas for gas heated households went from € 0.12,412 per kWh in April to € 0.1162 per kWh in May.
But the good news does not stop there: according to the exclusive forecasts of Sectra, the price of gas will continue to decrease in June. From June 1, 2025, it will decrease again by 5.3 % additional. On this date, the average gas price paid by a gas heated gas will therefore go from € 0.1162 to € 0.1100 per kWh.
By taking into account this double decrease, the average annual invoice of a gas heated household (annual consumption of 10,000 kWh) will drop from € 1,518 in April to around € 1,378 in June, or 156 € saved in just two months :
Month | Annual subscription price | Price per kWh | Average annual bill | Evolution compared to the previous month |
---|---|---|---|---|
Avril 2025 | 277,42 € | 0,1241 € | 1668 € | +1,8 % |
May 2025 | 277,42 € | 0,1162 € | 1579 € | -5,3 % |
June 2025 | 277,42 € | 0,1100 € | 1512 € | -4,2 % |

This double decrease constitutes a real puff of oxygen for millions of households using gas, all the more precious since, since the end of the gas price shield at the end of June 2023, the gas bill has exploded by 28.1 %. Despite these two consecutive months of decline in May and June 2025, the price of gas remains very high.

Why do some suppliers do not apply drops?
Despite this highly anticipated drop in the price of gas, you may notice that your bill does not automatically decrease. Indeed, according to the Selectra comparator, 63 % of natural gas offers in France currently marketed are fixed prices contracts.
Unlike indexed offers, which reflect the variations in the gas price fixed by CRE each month, these fixed offers have the advantage of providing tariff stability over a long duration, generally 1 to 3 years, thus protecting consumers during significant increases. On the other hand, they also have a major drawback: they do not automatically affect drops in the price of gas like those observed in May and June 2025.

Thus, despite the significant discounts announced for May and June, households having subscribed to a fixed price offer will continue to pay the price initially established in their contractwithout being able to enjoy these drops. This is particularly the case for customers who have subscribed to:
Almost all gas suppliers today offer offers with fixed prices. Note, however, that Ilek offers a curious offer: fixed prices but revised downwards only.
What’s going on for customers of the ENGIE gateway offer?
Good news for customers who have opted for the ENGIE gateway offer: this being an offer at an indexed price on the reference monthly rate, it automatically affects the price of the gas price. These subscribers will therefore immediately benefit from the price reductions in May and June 2025.

What are the offers to choose to take advantage of the drop in gas price?
To immediately take advantage of the drop in the price of gas in May and June 2025, households must turn to so -called “indexed” offers. These offers have the advantage of passing on the upward or downward fluctuations of the reference gas rate (CRE) each month. Thus, drops in the price of gas will be applied to the invoice automatically each month.
