Arc-bouted on the question of his security, Prince Harry believes that this is what prevents reconciliation with his family, and in particular his father, King Charles III. But several other reasons slow down this reunion.
Friday, after British justice once again refused him the right to benefit from protection paid by the taxpayer when he went to the country, the prince spoke to the BBC. This protection funded for active members of the royal family was withdrawn when he left the country in 2020 and stopped working for “the firm”, the royal institution.
“It is difficult to be in the royal family and outside the royal family,” said BFMTV the specialist in royalty Stéphane Bern. “If you are in the royal family, you benefit from a security service. But if you are outside the royal family, you are an average citizen. And in this case, taxpayers do not have to pay for your security.”
“This whole matter could be resolved”
In a filmed interview, Prince Harry regrets the situation that prevents him, he says, from putting a foothold in the United Kingdom with Meghan and their children Archie, 6 years old on May 6, and Lilibet, 3 years old. And above all, he assures, this decision holds him away from his father, when he ardently wishes him reconciliation.
“I do not know how long he stays in my father. He does not want to speak to me because of this security story,” he said on Friday, with quite a little tact, and little consideration for the recent statements by Queen Camilla, who assured that the king was going “better”.
The prince also believes that his father could have intervened to solve the problem. “My father has a lot of power and skills,” he said on Friday. “This whole affair could be resolved thanks to him”. According to British media, such a royal intervention would however be contrary to the Constitution.
“All of these questions have been examined several times and meticulously by the courts, which have come to the same conclusion each time,” Buckingham spokesperson coldly replied after Harry’s interview with the BBC.
“It’s not that the king does not want to speak to him”
According to a relative of the king quoted by the Times, “it is not that the king does not want to speak to him, is that he cannot do it. How can we have a private and delicate conversation when we know that she will find herself in a television news in the following hours?”.
Harry says it, he knows how many revelations from the media, in his autobiography The substitutein its Netflix series Harry & Meghanor in different interviews, may have irreparablely damaged his relationship with his family. The prince has indeed greatly scratched the royal institution there, but especially his brother, Prince William.
“Of course, some members of my family will never forgive me for having written a book. Of course, they will never forgive me a lot. But I would like to reconcile with my family,” says Harry.
“The doctors recommended the king not to speak to his son anymore,” says Stéphane Bern on BFMTV. “Because each time he spoke with Harry, Harry had always reproached, it deeply struggled the king. Whenever he took him on the phone, it was battles, quarrels that affected the king.”
Charles III, if he has resumed all his activities and official travels at an almost normal pace, is always treated for cancer. A recent hospitalization linked to side effects of his treatment thus reminded the British that the king was still sick.
The Prince also believes that security is a means of pressure from the royal family to control its members.
Threatened by al-Qaeda and neonazis
For Harry, this security problem is the source of all its misfortunes. “A discussion on security has suddenly become a discussion on a whole series of insecurity,” observes BBC News. The prince, who remains traumatized by the fate of his mother Diana, harassed all his life by the paparazzi and died in a chase with photographers in Paris, made a fight, with the fight against tabloids.
For example, he declared, recalls BBC News, that he ran a greater risk than his mother, due to “additional risk strata related to racism and extremism”.
“In recent years, my family and I have been the subject of well-documented neonazi and extremist threats, including on the part of Al-Qaeda. People are imprisoned on British soil due to such threats,” he said on the site of his foundation.
