In downtown Figeac, a strong smell of smoke reigned again at the end of the day this Monday, May 5. Earlier in the afternoon, a fire broke out in a building overlooking the emblematic hall of the Lot sub-prefecture. The disaster caused a lot of smoke and a lot of concern in the heart of the city.

“It was 4:30 p.m. when we received the first call. It was a start of fire on the first floor of the 12 place Carnot which gives to the rear of the building at 15 rue Séguier. The fire is in fact part of the restaurant of a restaurant” indicates Captain Munoz, column chief of the Lot firefighters, from Cahors, pilot the emergency operations on site. Few flames were seen but quickly important smoke spread in the floors of the building which houses the restaurant “Le Thoutân Canon” on the ground floor. The firefighters rescued two residents inconvenienced by the smoke but who were not injured. In the eyes of onlookers, the large scale had to be deployed in the hall to evacuate them from their accommodation located above the restaurant.
- “We evacuated two people who were on the 2nd and 4th floor of the building with the large scale. They were taken care of on the spot but did not require transport to the hospital. We also put two young women who were in a building next to it. There is a lot of soot and smoke, which will require the rehousing of the two occupants of the building” specifies Captain Munoz. “More fear than harm” welcomes the mayor of Figeac, André Mellinger, who went there to take stock with the emergency services.
To avoid any spread to neighboring buildings, impressive means were mobilized by firefighters. “In these kinds of situations, it is feared that the fire will propagate by the beams which communicate between the old buildings and that a district fire declares itself” recalls the chief of column of the Lot firefighters. The major system deployed on Monday initiated a total of three fire devices, two major scales, two ambulances as well as health support with nurses called in reinforcement. In all, around forty firefighters from the Figeac, Bagnac-sur-Célé, Capdenac-Gare and Cahors rescue centers intervened. The gendarmes led by the squadron chief Cubel, commanding the company of Figeac, were also present to secure the premises and facilitate the work of the firefighters. For the time being, the origin of the fire has not been determined. No hypothesis is privileged. An investigation must be opened.
