This funny election campaign makes me nostalgic.
Jacques Parizeau, one of my mentors, bequeathed us a multitude of achievements that have powerfully shaped modern Quebec.
But his most important legacy is due to what he tried to embody with his attitude.
Jacques Parizeau projected self -confidence and the refusal to be dominated by fear.
Fear, lack of confidence, the feeling of being condemned to subordinate roles, here, he thought, the most insidious enemies of Quebecers.
They are carpet inside us and, often, vehemently denied.
Non!
This fear is maintained by those who want us to stay quietly.
At the foot of the statue of M. Parizeau, in the gardens of the National Assembly, a quote from him, of which here is an extract:
“Don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid of your dreams. Do not be afraid to build a company that is like your ambitions. Do not be afraid of the obstacles you will find on your way. Don’t be afraid to dream. “
I am sure that this man, who spent his life trying to exorcise our fears, who fundamentally wanted us to decolonize, would not be proud of the spectacle that we are offering at the moment.
He would probably not say it publicly because he was more polite than me, but he would think no less.
Because that’s the sad truth: this whole electoral campaign is bathed in fear, and there is nothing to be proud of us at the moment.
Really not.
Fear blurs the judgment. Again. As so often in the past.
And when the ethical landmarks jump, the jackets turn around.
Are we in front of a choice between the right and the left? Not really.
The conservative party is on the right, the NPD on the left, and the block is sovereignist.
The Liberal Party is an opportunistic and without principles that will say what it takes to maximize its chances of winning.
As soon as Carney became chief, the PLC dropped its left positions and copied the conservative program.
Carney, a multimillionaire accustomed to Davos and tax havens, would be a man on the left? What a joke!
He has not lost time before rejecting a Quebec request: no to more powers in the appointment of judges.
The same
Should we then choose according to Trump?
What does that mean, exactly?
Whether Canada is governed by Carney or Hairy, their policies in front of the United States will be very similar because their options are reduced: counter-trials, helps the most affected sectors, diversification of our economic partnerships.
Even Mexico, as linked as us to the American economy, however poorer, remains worthy and keeps a cool head.
But with us, everything is bought and everything sells, including consciences.
No, really, there is nothing to be proud.
