Amazon has updated its Kindle application on iPhone and iPad, with users who can now buy books. It was not possible so far. But that has changed since Apple’s recent defeat against Epic Games.
The Kindle application offers the purchase of books on iOS
judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers recently forced Apple to allow iOS application developers to put links in their applications and refer to their sites to offer external payments. Thus, they avoid the Apple payment system and the Commission which can reach 30 %. This change is for the moment the United States.
With the old rules of the App Store, Amazon could technically sell books since its Kindle application, but that forced it to go through the Apple system and therefore pay it a commission for each purchase. Unsurprisingly, Amazon did not agree. Users had to buy books from Amazon site and go to the Kindle application.
With the update now available, Amazon offers users to buy books via a dedicated button on the Kindle application. Support on it opens a browser (safari in general). The user, who is connected with his Amazon account, only has to validate the purchase. It is Amazon who manages payment here and not Apple. Once it is done, it is automatically redirected to the Kindle application and its book is available.
As said before, this only concerns the United States because the judgment against Apple was decided by an American judge. In Europe and elsewhere, you always have to go manually to the Amazon site, make a purchase and then open the Kindle application so that the book appears.
