The fascinating adventure of a Mexican writer

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Vietnam -Mexico diplomatic relations (May 19, 1975 – May 19, 2025), the Mexico Embassy in Vietnam and the faculty of the University of Hanoi present “The Wild Book” of the famous author Juan Villoro.

The ’s book has sold nearly 2 million copies in Mexico, has been translated into several languages, has been converted into Braille for the visually impaired and is being cinematographic adaptation.

The tells the story of Juan, 13, who has to face a terrible summer: he often makes terrifying nightmares; The parents divorced, the mother smoked and drank all , and the father left in the distant Paris; And the worst part is that he will have to temporarily leave his familiar house and his friends to live with the uncle Tito, an old eccentric man who lives alone, in a house full of books.

These apparently boring and solitary holidays are becoming more and more exciting, interesting and captivating when Juan learns the existence of a book that has never been read, never written and never published: “The wild book”.

In the company of friends, Juan embarks on a trip to find a book which, it is said, is only accessible to those who are worthy of it. The unexpected adventure helps Juan to find a precious book and to many wonderful things about books and life.

Mr. Alejandro Negrin Muñoz, Ambassador of Mexico to Vietnam, said that the launch of the book is one of the most important events in the series of activities celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This is an opportunity for readers to discuss a famous Mexican literary work and also to learn more about the Spanish language in response to growing practical needs in Vietnam.

The author Juan Villoro expressed his joy when his work was published in Vietnam.

“I am that this work has been translated into many languages, especially in Braille for the visually impaired. , I am extremely happy to have made this trip to Vietnam. Since my childhood, I know the glorious story of this great country and I have always dreamed of having the chance to set foot there, ”said the author.

Representative of the publishing unit, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Minh, Director of Planning and Pamperation of Nha Nam, said: “Besides the great writers well known to Vietnamese readers, such as Carlos Fuentes or Octavio Paz, Mexican literature also has many excellent authors, such as Juan Villoro. The launch of the book will take place at 9:30 am on May 9 in Hall 102, Building C, University of Hanoi, with the participation of the guests: the translator Le Manh Thang – the translator of the book; Master Nguyen Thuy Trang – Deputy Chief of the Spanish department, University of Hanoi; Mr. Nguyen Xuan Minh – Director of planning and copyright, Nha Nam Culture and Communication Joint Stock Company.
