Even if contemporary art is not your cup of tea, you could be conquered (conquered) by this film on Lyne Lapointe, talented, original and committed which is part of the Canadian Visual Arts scene for half a century. Even if museums and galleries exposed it, she did not obtain the laurels she deserves. Germán Gutiérrez and Carmen Garcia remedied to this omission with this magnificent documentary on the sixty artist.

The film relates how much Lyne Lapointe had to face . Dysfunctional , , illness. But she has always rebounded, with remarkable resilience. Filming the artist in his house, in Estrie, the directors retrace his journey strewn with demonstrations of his genius and his strong identity. His meeting with Betty Goodwin, his studies in Ottawa, his installations presented with a cheek in disused buildings with her ex-partner Martha Fleming, his exhibitions in Montreal, New York or São Paulo.

We an energetic, daring and determined little bit of woman. An artist who has chosen marginality in art and who has always fought, as lesbian and woman, against prejudices. Choosing to be true, developing an unclassifiable style. Work on paper, sculptures with recycled objects, three -dimensional paintings, Lyne Lapointe uses all the materials, does not give itself any limits to the fragile and the intimate. With an art of resistance and affirmation of femininity, feminism and its essence to women.

The film is filled with touching moments, Lyne Lapointe being endearing, with her little laugh triggered when she evokes, with the directors or her spouse, the filmmaker Nancy Marcotte, the ironies of her existence.

The documentary contains many testimonies from an art environment that is full of praise for it. For Glenn D. Lowry, director of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York, “she does an extraordinary and remarkable job”. The collector and patron Pierre Bourgie believes that Lyne Lapointe is a poet of art. Her New York gallery owner, Jack Shainman, says that she is “one of the great artists of our time”. “It is a free artist who does not compromise,” adds Richard Gagnier, ex-head of the restoration of works at the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal.

“Being rebellious is a position and also a destiny,” said Diana Nemiroff, former curator at the Canada Museum of Fine Arts. A beautiful fate.
