“My goal is to be able to mix all the arts”: When drawing meets music

the essential
Until January 31, the artist Onna Cykill is exhibiting at Florida in a series of works created on CD, vinyl and even DVD covers. By mixing his two passions, drawing and music, he found his best means of expression.

The personality of David Lynch, who died on January 15, could alone sum up the ambitions of Onna Cykill, whose real name is Lionel Darqué. Screenwriter, director but also photographer, sculptor and musician, the American filmmaker could be the incarnation of “total art”, or the simultaneous use of several artistic fields. “It’s like a dream for artists to be able to create the perfect work that brings together all the arts. It’s my goal to be able to mix them and control them as best as possible,” notes Lionel Darqué.

His first passion was drawing, which he began practicing around the age of 7. “When my father couldn’t buy me toys, I made them up by drawing them,” he remembers. This means of expression, learned as an autodidact, was no longer sufficient when he discovered rock and groups like Metallica. Lionel Darqué became passionate about music and began collecting equipment to learn on his own.

Japanese influences

For this exhibition, entitled “Onna Cykill Kollector”, the 45-year-old artist has brought together around forty covers in CD, vinyl, audio cassette and even DVD format. Behind each drawing, mainly portraits, hides a more or less personal story, often linked to the music he produces. “Sometimes it’s the drawings that inspire me to make music, and others it’s the other way around,” he remarks. These illustrations, some of which were created at the age of 12 with remarkable mastery, represent several styles, from manga to photo-realistic drawings, including contemporary art and comics.

Many works refer to Japan, whose influence was nourished by a degree in Japanese languages, literature and civilization. On the musical side, Lionel Darqué mainly offers metal, inspired by the group Nine Inch Nails (NIИ) even in the creation of its logo. So with so many influences, how could you define your style? “Overall, it’s all styles,” he smiles. A true enthusiast, Lionel Darqué has a thousand stories to tell. Through this exhibition, he offers a stroll through his multi-colored world.
