From January 20, 2025, SNCF is testing a new technology simplifying the control of tickets and identities using the France Identity application. This innovation, deployed on certain TGV Inoui, aims to replace traditional tickets and identity cards with a secure QR code.
The current procedure of presenting a ticket and ID could soon be a thing of the past. With this new system, control is done in a single gesture. The France Identity application, developed by the State, generates an encrypted QR code containing essential information: surname, first name and date of birth of the traveler. During the check, the captain scans this code to simultaneously verify the identity and validity of the ticket.
This method, currently tested on certain TGV Inoui, could be extended to the entire SNCF network after an experimental phase. Travelers will need to download the app to their phone and register their digital ID card to activate the service.
A modern and secure service
The security of personal data is a central point of this innovation. The SNCF ensures that only the strictly necessary information, namely that provided when purchasing the ticket, is shared with the conductor. As indicated BFMTVthe code is encrypted and does not allow access to other personal data, thus guaranteeing use in accordance with data protection standards.
The introduction of this technology is part of a broader digital transformation process at SNCF. By integrating France Identity functionalities, the company hopes to offer a smoother experience to its users while improving the speed and efficiency of checks. If the testing phase is successful, this system could become a standard for train travel, reducing dependence on physical documents and the risk of errors.
-Towards a national deployment?
SNCF plans a gradual deployment of this system in the coming months. In addition to the benefits for travelers, this innovation could also reduce costs related to printing tickets and limit fraud. The France Identity application, still in beta version, will be accessible to everyone by the end of the year.
With this innovation, SNCF reaffirms its commitment to a modern and secure rail service. This new system, combining simplicity and data protection, could well permanently transform the way of traveling by train in France. The next few weeks will be crucial to validate its effectiveness and its acceptance by the public.
