“I paint every day, it’s a daily pleasure, I never get bored” confided Michel King in our columns a few years ago during one of his exhibitions. The painter, well known to residents of the region for being installed there, has died Saturday January 18 2025 at the age of 95.

Graduate of Fine Arts

The artist lived in the small village of Saint-Mardsnot far from Bacqueville-en-Caux (Seine-Maritime). Born July 2, 1930 in Sotteville-lès-, he discovered painting at the age of 14.

At the age of 17 and with the consent of his parents, he left his boilermaking studies to devote himself to his passion. The only condition for his parents is that he becomes a drawing teacher.

What he will be in 1951 in . There he discovered the fraternal microcosm of artists from Saint-Germain-en-Laye before obtaining his diploma at the Beaux-Arts. A school of which he is was the president.

Official painter of the Navy

In 1973, he was appointed official painter of the Navy and on board the boats, a new world opened up to him. Painting has always been an opportunity for great encounters for Michel King. They were the very quintessence of his art and his life.

The artist has always taken great pleasure in sketching portraits and scenes of daily life taken from his many travels.

Numerous stays in China

Michel King was a specialist in oil painting, watercolor, drawing and many other techniques. He created the stained glass windows of the Chamber of Commerce of Dieppe and the church of its commune. He exhibited in , South Korea, the United States, Japan, Switzerland…

At the end of the 1990s, his gaze turned to China, where he visited several times. A country made up of encounters with the Dong and Miao people who inspire it. Michel King then offers another palette of his artistic talents through refined watercolors where the line meets with great mastery the very demanding technique of the print.
