Former Nightwish bassist and vocalist Marko Hietala spoke in a recent interview with Belgian Jasper on his desire to look to the future after several years marked by personal and professional challenges. Four years after leaving the group, Hietala is ready to write a new chapter in his career.
“It’s time to move forward”
Marko said: “I’ve been through some really tough years, and it’s time to move on. It doesn’t necessarily reflect anything on the band, but I had a lot of things to sort out.”
Since leaving Nightwish in January 2021, Hietala has collaborated with former members of the group, most notably with Tarja Turunen on the single Left On Mars and during landmark live performances in 2024. However, it remains clear that these projects represent only a transitional stage in his career.
“These collaborations were fun and enjoyable for a while, but they didn’t really meet our respective ambitions. It’s good for now, but it’s not a long-term prospect.”

Deep reasons behind his departure from Nightwish
Marko explained that his decision to leave Nightwish was driven by personal and organizational challenges: “I had a lot of weight on my shoulders, and the internal organization and attitudes within the group were one of the main reasons for my departure. If a reunion were ever to happen, a lot of things would have to be rearranged.”
He also addressed the mental health issues he had to overcome, including chronic depression, insomnia and an attention disorder diagnosed after his departure. Marko highlighted the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown, which allowed him to think deeply about his situation.
“I was already waking up every night at three in the morning, haunted by distressing dreams. This process probably started after my divorce in 2016, and it intensified over time. I needed a change so I wouldn’t continue to destroy myself.”
A promising musical future
Hietala remains proud of his musical contribution with Nightwish and is now focusing on his solo projects. His new album, Roses From The Deepwill be released on February 7, 2025 via Nuclear Blast. This album will mark a new stage for the artist, who seeks to regain his balance and explore new artistic avenues.
“I always supported the music we made with Nightwish because it was ambitious and versatile. But now I want to continue creating and exploring other horizons.”
