Why a small A-frame house on stilts?

In Bangladesh, not only are residents threatened by floods, which destroy their property, but This country is also one of the poorest in the world. This country should nevertheless leave the LDC (Least Developed Country) category in 2026, according to a recent report from the French Ministry of Economy. It is therefore in the spirit of offering a safer, but also affordable house that the Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassumin collaboration with AKT II engineers, has designed the Khudia Bari (small house in Bengali). It looks like a small A-frame house, but it is perched on stilts, responding to the country’s two problems.

You should not expect to discover a luxurious A-frame house as can be the case with some models. With the Khudia Bari, we are in the useful, in the essential, far from any superficiality. Perched on ingeniously arranged bamboos, the small house can withstand climatic conditions. Bamboo was not chosen by chance, it is a solid wood, and above all flexible, which can move without breaking to the rhythm of climatic events. The anchors were designed in recycled aluminum to hold the bamboos. As for the walls and the roof, they are made from local materials, which can be polycarbonate or metal.

More than 100 A-frame houses on stilts have been built

The visit will not be very long since these small A-shaped houses on stilts are intended for a surface area ranging from 5.95 m² to 13.4 m². A single room welcomes the owners, up high, but the architect specifies that the house can be decorated with an additional room, below the first. It is a lightweight and extremely inexpensive structure that can be assembled and disassembled by hand, without electricity or any other means of mechanical propulsion,” ” explains the architect in a press release from his company, Vitra. At the time of writing, more than 100 small A-frame houses on stilts have been installed in the country.

According to the New Atlas website, this small house would cost approximately $380 or €350. A reasonable price, but the architect is looking to reduce this cost.
