25/11/24 – market and exhibition – There are certain artists on whom The Art Tribune comes up often, as they are frequently in the spotlight. André Devambez is one of them, and we do not hesitate to talk about him whenever possible, because it is certainly one of the most beautiful rediscoveries of recent years. Even if his name has never disappeared, his art is sometimes elusive, oscillating between pure academicism (he was, among other things, Prix de Rome and member of the Institute) and avant-garde – but an avant-garde which is unique to it and unlike any other – makes it in a certain way unclassifiable.

The exhibition dedicated to him by Nicolas Schwed, where all the paintings and drawings are offered for sale, therefore follows the retrospective at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Renne and the Petit Palais last year. There are some works that were already presented there, but above all a very large number of unpublished works, which cover almost all the genres to which Devambez sacrificed, from the history painting that he practiced at the beginning of his career – we note for example the impressive preparatory cardboard for his painting Saint John of Capistran, to mortify himself, walking through the streets of Perugia on a donkey and with ridiculous clothes (ill. 1) – landscapes, funny illustration of tales (Gulliverill. 2) portraits.
