Abu Dhabi is starting to have a few buildings that help to amplify its reputation. The Louvre Abu Dhabi designed by thearchitectarchitect Frenchman Jean Nouvel, the Etihad Towers or even the constructionconstruction in progress at the Zayed National Museum proves that the country is developing while retaining the imprint of a predominant culture.
The Sphere: a grandiose structure
The Abu Dhabi Sphere will be, a priorisimilar to that of Las VegasVegas with its 112 meters high and 157 meters wide. Designed from more or less complex mathematical formulas known for centuries – from the essential use of Pi to theoremtheorem complete from Kirchhoff to Hartley's law – the project has become one of the most astonishing in recent years.
From a resolutionresolution of 16K, the Sphere is covered with almost 54,000 square meters of LED screens visible from space, making this spherical screen the largest in the world. A concert hall where the Irish group U2 has notably performed, it has some 17,385 seats and would even have the capacity to accommodate the Statue of Liberty without incident. Announced in 2018, the Sphere will open in 2023 in Las Vegas at a cost of 2.3 billion US dollars.
To have the opportunity to appear outside the Sphere, brands must pay no less than $450,000 for a single day and many of them have already seized the… sphere in leaps and bounds!
And in Abu Dhabi?
For now, the project has simply been announced by entertainment company Sphere Entertainment Co. and the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism. However, the location of the second Sphere has not yet been decided, nor its date of opening to the public. As for the team that will take care of the project, it is not a priori not yet constituted, either.
We can nevertheless say that this project is part of the development line of the city which has been investing for several years already in high-level cultural infrastructures such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the future Guggenheim Abu Dhabi with incredibly architectural original which should open its doors in 2025.
