Paris Photo 2024 is making a strong showing for its return to the renovated Grand Palais. No booth. An immense wall, 36.5 m long and 3.5 m high, displays some 619 portraits of 20th century Germany.e century to all visitors who enter the nave. « People of the 20th Century » is the major work of the great German photographer, August Sander (1876-1964).
It is the panoramic portrait of a nation, classified by archetypes, from which museums have drawn heavily for their exhibitions, such as “Germany, 1920s, New Objectivity, August Sander” at the Center Pompidou in 2022. But, this time, they are all there. Looks that look coldly at the lens, without ever smiling, from the wanderer to the artistic couple Otto Dix and his wife Martha, from the peasant to the musician, from idiots to political prisoners. Fascinating and slightly chilling experience.
